FUE - Follicular Unit Extraction Hair Transplant
FUE is a technique that removes hair follicles individually from one area of the body – the donor site and transplants them to a bald or balding area – the recipient site. This technique is usually used to treat male pattern baldness. It is also a suitable surgical option for female pattern hair loss. There are no cuts involved in this surgery and thus sutures are not required. However, it is a slightly time consuming method but it is painless. This surgical procedure is most suited for the people who have lesser area of baldness where less number of grafts are needed. In this procedure each graft is harvested one at a time with small 0.8 and 0.9 mm punches so that they heal as basically untraceable dots in the scalp.
Procedure
The back of the scalp is shaved. Then, the doctor extracts hair follicles one by one from the donor area. After he prepares the grafts, the surgeon cleans and numbs the area where the grafts are to be implanted. He creates holes or slits with a scalpel or needle, and delicately places one graft in each of the holes.
Results
The results from a FUE transplant are permanent. The transplanted hair will fall out after a few weeks but the root stays in place and will grow back strong and healthy.
Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS)
The surgeon removes a 6- to 10-inch strip of scalp from the back of your head. He sets it aside and sews the scalp closed. This area is immediately hidden by the hair around it.
The surgeon’s team divides the strip of removed scalp into 500 to 2,000 tiny grafts, each with an individual hair or just a few hairs. The number and type of graft you get depends on your hair type, quality, color, and the size of the area where you’re getting the transplant.
Procedure
In direct hair transplant method the hair follicles are implanted one by one directly to the recipient area that needs to be covered. Each hair follicle is placed in a particular direction, depth and angle that help to get 100% natural results with maximum density.
Results
The new hair growth can be seen within 2 months and full growth can be appreciated in 8-9 months.
FAQs
No specific precautions need to be taken prior to the hair transplant procedure. However it is advised that patients will not take blood thinners at least 7 days prior to the procedure, in order to avoid prolonged bleeding during implantation.
There is absolutely no scarring only a mild redness in the donor area that will subside after a week post session.
The procedure is done under local anesthesia. So the pain will be felt for just a few minutes while the area is being anesthetized.
Yes, females can also undergo this treatment.
Side Effects
There can be some swelling over the forehead, across the bridge of the nose and around the eyes on the 3rd day of surgery; but it is generally self limiting and passes off in the next 2-3 days.
Some patients may develop numbness over the transplanted area which can persist from few days to few weeks. It is because of the local anesthesia used during hair transplantation, but this is also self limiting and does not interfere with the day-to-day activities of the patient.
